Elon Musk Finished 2021 Atop Bloomberg’s Super Rich Chart. The last year, still marked by the pandemic, has made the rich even richer: the collective fortune of the world’s 500 richest people has grown by a trillion. The Bloomberg Billionaires Index 500 have a combined fortune that exceeds 8,400 billion dollarsmore than the GDP of all countries except the United States and China. 10 super-rich have fortunes in excess of $100 billion
The numbers, explains Bloomberg, show how the recovery from the economic shock resulting from Covid-19 has been uneven and radicalized inequalities, with the richest – for example – benefiting from a relaxed fiscal policy. The pandemic has also pushed up to 150 million people into extreme poverty, according to World Bank estimates, a number that is expected to rise if inflation continues to rise.
Elon Musk is therefore at the top of the Bloomberg Billionaires Index: the multibillion-dollar Tesla Motors CEO has never been richer and ended the year with $273.5 billion in assets and 75% profit. It is a level of wealth previously achieved only by John D. Rockefeller and is the highest level of wealth, adjusted for inflation, in the modern era.
