Researchers have finally cracked the 60-year-old mystery behind why orange cats are predominantly male. A study revealed that a mutation in the Arhgap36 gene leads to overproduction of pheomelanin, resulting in the signature orange hue. This gene’s location on the X chromosome and a process called X inactivation explains the unique coat patterns in calico and tortoiseshell cats.
