MUMBAI: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has launched the ‘Sports Excellence Admission‘ (SEA) program starting from the academic year 2024-2025. This initiative introduces two additional seats per undergraduate program for Indian students, with one seat specifically reserved for female applicants.
IIT Madras is leading among all IITs in implementing this admission process tailored for sportspersons. The institute unveiled a dedicated portal (https://jeeadv.iitm.ac.in/sea) on June 11, 2024, facilitating separate application procedures from the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) portal.
Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, underscored the significance of sports in fostering qualities like good health, discipline, and resilience in handling success and setbacks. He commented, “The sports quota will ensure the presence of youth embodying these values on our campus, serving as role models for others.”
Eligibility for SEA requires candidates to qualify for JEE (Advanced) and have secured at least one medal in a National/International-level sports competition in the past four years. A ‘Sports Rank List’ (SRL) will rank applicants based on their performance across specified sports disciplines, determining seat allocation.
IIT Madras has invested in cutting-edge sports infrastructure and research facilities, including the Center of Excellence in Sports Science and Analytics (CESSA). The institute also offers advanced sports science courses and collaborates on sports coaching programs for students and coaches alike.
