In recent years, the Home Cinema market has undergone a series of developments that, in fact, have also led to greater accessibility from an economic point of view. One example above all is the prices of TV panels, which are currently on the market at prices unthinkable even a few years ago. Objectively, today we could almost say that buying a 55-inch panel can be compared to a 32-inch one a few years ago. However, despite what has been said so far, the video projector remains today one of the solutions that best manage to bring cinema into the home. For this reason, we decided to write a small guide that can help you better understand which home movie projector purchase. Are you ready to discover the different technologies?
Home Cinema Projector – Let the guide begin
Having a Home Cinema projector in your audio/video chain will allow you to have a home experience very close to that of the great hall. Mainly because of the screen size you can get. In fact, unlike an LCD or OLED panel, with the video projector you can guarantee a screen of 100, 200 or more inches. Not bad right?
Also, if you think that using this type of component means a washed out image with no contrast… forget all that! Today’s technology allows you to project sharp images with excellent dynamic range and therefore excellent contrast.
How to find your way around the different technologies
Before starting the frantic search in online and physical stores, it is good to understand which architecture to direct the choices to. The top video projectors on the market can be categorized into LED, Laser, LCD, DLP and LcoS.
LED
LED projectors are usually the small ones, for those looking for portability. From a technical point of view this involves some small sacrifices compared to other technologies, in fact they are generally a little less brilliant. In conclusion, they are the perfect choice if you are short on space or want an object to comfortably take to the holiday home (perhaps the chosen model is also equipped with integrated audio speakers).
LCD
So let’s start by presenting the typical characteristics of LCDs. Models equipped with this technology usually have good contrast and good brightness and excellent saturation. The first two parameters are generally a little lower than what DLP technology offers. LCD projectors don’t even suffer from the rainbow effect, but we’ll see what it is later on. From an economic point of view, LCDs are excellent value for money and are definitely a great option.

Laser
These models are often the most technologically expensive and bring with them many of the benefits seen with LCDs. Contrasts are great, as is the black level. The brightness is also often high and the lamp lasts at least three times longer than traditional lamps.

DLP
DPL projectors are known among enthusiasts for their great brightness and sharpness offered. These models can be single-chip or 3-chip. The latter do not suffer from the rainbow effect, nor from the possibility of the viewer perceiving a kind of color wheel on the screen that creates a rainbow. Not all users are subject to this. However, when in doubt, we recommend the 3-chip models.

LcoS
LCoS projectors are the best choice for those looking for deep black and maximum contrast. However, we inform you that brightness is not its strong point, it is advisable to buy it if you want a screen that does not exceed 2.5 in length and that the room is adequately darkened.

Some thoughts on the resolution
From a resolution point of view, our recommendation is to orient yourself at least to a video projector that is capable of projecting high definition images at 1080p. This is because we are already largely immersed in 4K and the future will be 8K. Don’t worry, because with a 1080p model you can easily get great satisfactions.
The only considerations you need to make are the screen size you want to achieve and the expected viewing distance. 1080p resolution is good for a screen of about two meters at a distance of about 3 meters. Of course, if your budget allows, higher resolutions are always recommended. Another important note is the use you will make of it. If you usually buy physical copies of your favorite movies, the choice should be a 4K model, so as to natively exploit the full visual power of the format!
