Anil Kapoor’s political thriller ‘Nayak’ is considered a cult classic, with Rani Mukerji also playing a prominent role. Reports suggest that a sequel, ‘Nayak 2‘, is in the works with the original cast.
However, did you know Shah Rukh Khan was initially offered the lead role and he had signed the film for one rupee? Yes, you read that right! In a past interview with Rediff, Shah Rukh Khan disclosed that he had signed on for Nayak and accepted only one rupee as his signing amount.“Did he (Shankar) also tell you that I signed for him and took a signing amount? You know how much? One rupee. I took one rupee from him. And told him I would give him dates in bulk whenever he wanted them,” he shared.
The actor shared that he appreciated the Tamil original of Nayak but had concerns about adapting its central theme for the Hindi version. He felt the concept of a chief minister for a day, which worked well in the Tamil context, might not have the same impact in North India. Due to some differences in vision, they chose not to move forward with the project. The film, directed by S. Shankar, was released in 2001.

According to a latest report, Siddharth Anand is planning a sequel to the film, with Milan Luthria reportedly taking over as the director.
According to insiders, Nayak 2 will be produced by Siddharth and Mamta Anand under their banner, Marflix Pictures. The sequel will continue the tradition of a grand-scale commercial entertainer set in the political arena and will be directed by Milan Luthria. The storyline has been crafted to seamlessly lead into the sequel, incorporating elements of a vigilante narrative.

Nayak, a political thriller, was based on director Shankar’s Tamil film Mudhalvan. The movie gained significant popularity through its frequent television broadcasts after its initial release. In addition to Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukerji, it featured notable actors such as Amrish Puri, Paresh Rawal, and Johnny Lever.
