BMW 7 Series, luxury and technology also for the electric flagship
A diesel version is planned for Europe
Milan, April 20 (askanews) – BMW takes the concept of technology and luxury to another level with the new 7 Series. 45 years after its debut, the seventh generation of the house’s flagship arrives, presented as a worldwide preview in streaming by the group’s CEO, Oliver Zipse. The new Level 3 Autonomous Driving Ready 7 Series will be available in all-electric, plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid versions, with petrol and diesel engines (Europe only).
“The new 7 Series is a masterpiece of German engineering and embodies the best of BMW: it represents the state of the art in technology and design,” said Zipse.
The new 7 Series will only be available in the long-wheelbase version, measuring 5.39 meters, while weight starts at around 2.1 tonnes for the mild hybrid versions up to 2.7 tonnes for the electric one. The cockpit brings all the best of the house: BMW Curved Display with 12.3-inch digital panel and 14.9-inch screen in the center of the dashboard, 5G connectivity and the new BMW Interaction Bar, a functional backlit strip that extends from one door to another. For rear passengers, in addition to the Executive Lounge option with reclining seats, there is for the first time a retractable 31.3-inch 8K-resolution touchscreen with YouTube and Amazon Fire TV built in for streaming movies, video games and more. The result is a cinematic effect, amplified by 36 Bowers & Wilkins speakers. The 7 Series, equipped with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, is equipped with air suspension as standard, while 4-wheel steering and active roll stabilizer are available as an option.
In Europe, the 7 Series will be available at launch only in the electric version BMW i7 xDrive60 with two engines, one per axle, for a total of 544 HP (745 Nm of torque) and an indicative range of 590-625 km, thanks to 101 .7 kWh. A diesel version will also arrive in early 2023: the 740d xDrive, with a 300hp 6-cylinder mild hybrid.
In the US and China, two versions with 3.0-liter 6-cylinder mild hybrid gasoline engines will be available at launch: the 735i and 740i. The top of the range will be the 760i xDrive with a 544hp V8 petrol engine with 48V mild hybrid technology. Other plug-in variants are planned for early 2023, featuring fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology and an 18.7 kWh battery, capable of an electric range of up to 80 km. The new 7 Series will also be available in two M variants. The M760e xDrive plug-in hybrid arrives in spring 2023 with a 571hp inline 6-cylinder petrol engine mated to an electric motor capable of an extra 30/40hp boost. . The top model will be the BMW i7 M70 xDrive scheduled for the end of 2023 with two electric motors, 660hp of power and 1,000 Nm of torque (indicative data): it will be the most powerful road-going Bmw model ever with acceleration 0.100 in 4 seconds.
The new BMW 7 Series will be launched on the market in November 2022 and will be produced at the Dingolfing plant, the group’s largest in Europe, where electric motors and batteries will also be manufactured.
